October 6 - 23 (or 29), 2011 With Raisa Gareeva
We are proud to have designed an 18 day itinerary, which offers a comprehensive exploration of this fascinating region of Xinjiang Province, an experience virtually unknown to Americans. Following this journey is an optional extension in Yunnan Province. The tour is being offered, from October 6-23 (or 29 with extension), 2011.

Raisa Gareeva, your friend from Salom Travel in Uzbekistan, will accompany the group. She has been to Western China several times. To assure the most suitable hotels and restaurants for your tour, she will do an inspection tour of the area in March. Upon her return and recommendations, the itinerary may be altered slightly.

During her visit, she will be meeting families with whom you will have a chance to dine in their homes, she will find a social service agency we can visit, and she will find fascinating crafts people to visit also.

Many of you have been with Raisa and me in Central Asia on one of the twelve previous times we’ve run the trip. You may have been to Russia or the Caucasus with us too. We are so glad that the trips are always fantastic successes, which earn rave reviews from the participants. We strive to make this journey throughout several parts of China, of the same caliber. Raisa says that parts of Xinjiang Province is in many ways similar to Central Asia of today and of some decades ago. She assures us how very safe and very welcome you will feel among the friendly, warm people there.

To assure the exclusivity and quality of this tour, again the participant base is being held small. We would love to have you join us in this rare opportunity to participate in this trip. Without question, you will find this to be a spectacular, unforgettable and truly precious journey to incomparable, colorful, ancient lands, rich with archeological, ethnographic, cultural and crafts treasures. Highlights will include visits to the marvelous cities of Ürümqi, Kasghar, Dunhuang, Lanzhou and many others. The optional extension will take you to Yunnan province to Kunming to Dali, and Lijiang.

The trip will begin in Beijing and end in Shanghai and for those who would like additional days in those cities, that can be arranged. There are many flights in this itinerary, due to the geographical immensity of China and the regions you will visit.
Our trip is unique from others in many ways, including its many opportunities to connect with the locals. In addition to conversations with them in the fields where they are working, or other natural places for them to be, we will offer a number of meals in private homes. We also offer many “extras” (shows, opportunities to meet crafts people in their studios, snacks in the bus and every effort to fulfill “special requests” on the part of the travelers). Our goal is to make the trip as convenient as possible for the traveler so his or her energy can be spent enjoying the surroundings, not shouldering basic details.

The itinerary we will be following has been developed based on other itineraries we have studied for the region. It is by far one of the most in-depth programs for that region available anywhere. Expert local guides will provide entertaining, informative and intimate insights into the history and cultures of several regions of this fabled country of China.

On her inspection tour Raisa will be scouting families with whom we can dine, crafts people we can meet, a social service agency we can visit, a factory we can tour and other distinctive “Raisa” style touches. These are not listed in the itinerary below as they are not yet fully identified.
